Harry D. Merold was born in Tower City, Pennsylvania to Pat Merold and his second wife, Victoria. His family would later move to Akron, Ohio, where he would attend North High and marry Ruth, born March 02, 1907. His wife Ruth was reportedly very beautiful. As an adult, Harry worked in the Government Printing Office. He was the highest paid non-political officer in the printing office at the time. He would later be investigated by the government during McCarthyism for communist ties and tendencies. Having served under both Republican and Democrat regimes, he used to tell the family all about what was going on and laugh about the ridiculousness of it. Harry was living proof you can laugh at the government, and still survive. Owner of the last laugh, Harry, the invincible, retained his job and eventually retired to the comforts of Florida with his wife.

* Made public in January 2003, Harry D. Merold's testimony (August 14,1954) in the McCarthy Hearings of 1953-54 is a matter of congressional record: Committee on Government Operations; 83rd Congress, 1954, First Session; Volume Two, page 1547
