Patrick Merold, originally of Tower City, was a Pennsylvania coal
miner. He would marry twice. His first marriage was to a local Pennsylvania
girl, Stella Hand. Together, Stella and Pat had four sons. After
Stella's death, Pat married again, this time to Victoria Klinger.
They, in turn, had three more boys. Patrick Merold would eventually
move his entire family out of Pennsylvania, and resettle them in
Akron, Ohio. In Ohio, Pat escaped coal mining for good. He got a
job in a local rubber shop, working as a dock man, and later made
a living as a musician. Although proficient with countless instruments,
the violin was his first love. Even well into old age, Pat Merold,
still an extraordinary violin player, was out in the clubs every
Saturday and Sunday night playing with his band.
