Robert, with his red hair and serious brown eyes, would begin working
around the age of 12. His first job: doing janitorial work for the
elementary school he attended. Robert would go on to work everyday
of his life for many decades to come, growing up a self made man.
He would eventually become an engineer, working on all sorts of
projects, from military blimps, the N-ships and K-ships, to redesigning
food processing lines and equipment. Robert Lee Merold, son of John
Adam Merold and Marie Edith Spalding, would receive his draft card
on January 20, 1959, but never serve. Several days found him packed
up with his toothbrush and requisite underwear waiting, only to
be passed over at the eleventh hour.
Robert would marry twice in life, have 6 kids in total, and would
become a patented inventor. He never attended a four year University,
but would make every sacrifice to see his second wife and all three
of their children had the opportunity he never had himself, the
chance to go to college. Robert is finally retired and busy planting
rose gardens in the limestone of the Texas Hill Country.
* Recently discovered school history: Robert
