Marie Edith Spalding was born in Akron, Ohio,
in 1901. She had brown eyes, unimaginable red hair, a soft heart
and decadent kitchen recipes.
Raised a strict Catholic, she attended St. Martha's grade school
and then St. Vincent's High School. After graduation, Marie worked
as a secretary at a local rubber shop until her marriage to John
Adam Merold. She and John would have four children together.
Marie continued to work hard all her life as housewife, mother,
and grandmother. She was a demon in the kitchen, and a wonderfully
accomplished embroiderer, doll-maker and seamstress. She was also
active in many sewing circles and quilt groups. Marie was easy to
love, had a terribly wicked sense of humor, and was surrounded by
childhood friends her entire life. On weekends, she hosted card
parties, a group of friends which came to call itself "The
Buzzards." Together they would go on trips, play cards and
raise general havoc.
On May of 1977, Marie Edith Spalding would pass away from complications
of a stroke, leaving all who survived her heartbroken. She is burried
together with the Merold family at the Rose Hill Burial Park, in
Akron, Ohio.
